Do I Really Want This (and Why?)

We've all been there, contemplating a massive life choice, whether it be leaving a steady job to start your own business, taking the next step in a special relationship, or relocating your family to a new home. In these moments, a crucial question arises: Do I really want this, and why?

Wanting something and desiring something are two very different things. Desire is that initial sizzle, the rush triggered by novelty and excitement. It's the "ooh, shiny!" that grabs our attention. Want, on the other hand, is deeper. It's the quiet hum of alignment, the resonance with our values, our goals, our truest selves.

It’s easy to skip straight to “Yes” or “No”, but before we allow impulse to make our choices for us, it’s smart to take a mindful pause and think about the “Why”.

Why?

  • Is your “Why” rooted in your core values, your passions, or your long-term vision? Or is it fueled by peer pressure or the fear of missing out? Identifying the source will illuminate your path ahead.
  • Even the most enticing prospects come with fears. What scares you about his? Acknowledging your fears will empower you to face them head-on.
  • Explore alternate scenarios. What if it doesn’t work out? Visualize alternate paths and assess if you’re equipped to navigate them.

Listen to your gut.

  • Does this prospect feel like an exciting ride, or a stormy abyss filled with anxiety? Your body will whisper subtle truths to you, learn to listen to them.
  • Learn to silence the external noise and listen to your inner voice. When you pause for the quiet moments, it can reveal hidden desires and anxieties.
  • Pay attention to your energy levels. How does this possibility affect you? Does it drain you or energize you? This can be a powerful indicator of how things align with your true desires.

Whether you answer “Yes” or “No” to life’s questions isn’t etched in stone. It’s a dynamic choice and a journey of self-discovery. Your truest wants will reveal themselves in good time.
